First Impressions… Good or not so good?

We’ve all heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression”. This is true in every aspect of your life especially when meeting someone for a first date. Making a good first impression can make the difference of seeing that person again or never hearing from them. Make a good first impression on him or her and they’ll never want to meet anyone else. Here are some easy tips…

Dress To Impress: When meeting for the first time it’s a good idea to know what your date has planned. Are you meeting for drinks, a casual coffee and a walk or is he planning an activity, like an art gallery opening? It’s ok to ask your date how you should dress so you don’t get caught underdressed or worse, dressed inappropriate for the occasion. In most cases it’s better to dress “up” rather than feel uncomfortable if you’re underdressed.

Remember Your Manners: Manners are a simple and easy way to make not only a good first impression but a lasting one. Basic manners like Please and Thank You, how your date treats serving staff and other people you encounter during your date can tell a lot about someone. How people treat others can be a good indicator of how they will treat you.

Show Your Sense of Humour: Having a good sense of humour is more than being able to tell a good joke. It shows a fun playful side to your personality and that you’re fun to be around. People like to spent time with fun people.

Be a Good Listener: Asking open questions is a great way to learn about the other person and also shows you’re interested in them. Don’t make your date feel like they’re being interviewed or worse interrogated. Asking questions with genuine interest allows for an easy flow of conversation. If you find your date is asking all the questions, at your last answer respond, “…and what about you”? This is a great way to turn the conversation back to the other person.

Talk of Sex to Quickly: Time and again I hear women tell me the date was going so well. We talked about “everything”, we have so much in common, and then he made some off handed comment about having sex on a first date… it went down-hill from there. Physical intimacy is important in a relationship however letting her know you’re not in a rush to take her to bed will show you respect her.

Show Your Confidence: Trashing your ex, talking about how many dates you’ve been on recently and how bad your last relationship was isn’t what your date wants to hear. Talking about the positive things in your life, the things that make you happy and where you’re future is going will make your date want to be part of your life.

You know you’ve made a good first impression when you tell your date you had a great time and ask “when can I see you again” and she says, “I had a great time too” and “tomorrow”.
